Mothers and Daughters
A Short documentary
"Mothers and Daughters" investigates the relationship between a carer daughter Lyn, and her increasingly dependent mother Katy, as Katy deteriorates due to her advanced age and worsening dementia. The film which focusses on the emotional price the daughter Lyn willingly pays, was the winner in the Metro section of Best Documentary in the Setting Sun Short film festival.
The short film “Mothers & Daughters” is a study of
one woman Lyn who intended to look after her mother for perhaps 6 months but eventually finish the assignment on her mother’s passing 8 years later! An outcome Lyn never excepted.

Did those 8 years have potential Lyn failed to perceive?

But that’s the sort of anonymous dedication people show in those special relationships that exist between a mother and child; a mother and daughter. It’s not just about love. It’s a deep familial connection.

Of course there are other types of powerful relationships but “Mothers & Daughters” lays bare issues that arise when intensive assistance is required by a frail old woman at the end of her life. They are issues that affect all of us as we age:
-
who is going to look after us if we become very vulnerable?
-
What financial support can we expect?
-
Can a “carer” be expected to look after us with the same love and concern as a loving family member?
-
Hospitals are already under massive pressure. How do they cope with high maintenance, older clients?
Daughters, who have looked after their mothers and all their many needs, start to see their own future.
The same goes for the rest of us. It is highly likely that as we near death, we may require around-the-clock help.
How far should we as a community extend ourselves to help the vulnerable with these needs?
